Nine people, including a woman, have been killed since yesterday after fresh violence erupted in the northern state of Manipur, India.

The incident occurred during a late-night shooting in the Khamenlok area of the state, according to Indian media.

Several injured people were taken for treatment in Imphal right away. The sources reported that multiple bullet wounds and cut marks were present on the bodies of some of the incident victims.

In May, at least 40 suspected militants and two police officers were killed after violence broke out in the state.

The state has been on edge following an outbreak of interethnic violence last month, killing at least 100 lives, leaving many more injured and displacing thousands.

More than 30,000 thousand people evacuated their homes for safety due to the violent demonstration, which forced the federal government to send thousands of troops to maintain security in the state.

The recent violence started due to protest marches by tribal organizations over a proposal to give the majority of Meities Scheduled Tribe status.

Manipur’s curfew is now in effect in 11 of the state’s 16 districts. The internet has been shut off throughout the state to stop speculations from igniting unrest.
