6 policemen martyred in Kandahar clash

Six policemen have embraced martyrdom in a gun battle with Taliban insurgents in southern Kandahar province.

Samim Khpalwak, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province says that the gun battle occurred in Maiwand District late yesterday.

He said that six policemen embraced martyrdom in the gunbattle.

Khpalwak added that Taliban insurgents also suffered casualties during the exchange of fire with the security forces in the gun battle but he did not have a exact number of the Taliban killed in the gun battle.

Khpalwak also said that policemen have seized weapons and ammunition from the insurgents.

There is no immediate comment from Taliban insurgents on the report.

Maiwand District is located some 70 kilometers west of Kandahar city which also has border with the restive Hilmand Province and some other restive District in Kandahar Province.

It is has witnessed some heavy Taliban attacks.

Earlier this month four policemen were killed by their comrades in a check post of Maiwand District.

The comrades had disappeared from the check post following the attack.

Officials said that two policemen from the check post possibly had links with insurgents.
