4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Northeast Afghanistan

An Earthquake of magnitude 4.2 jolted the Northeast Province of Afghanistan on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 rocked Taloqan capital centre of Takhar province of Afghanistan, on Monday at 124 km depth.

The earthquake occurred at 3:53 am local time at 124 km depth on Monday, March 27th 2023.

No causalities have been reported till now.

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake that struck northeast of Afghanistan last week caused at least ten fatalities and about 80 injuries, the report said.

The report stated that the earthquake also caused financial and social damage to the people, including 63 houses being entirely or partially damaged and several cattle being lost. 

The region is vulnerable due to the activities of plate tectonic in the region, particularly Badakhshan, Takhar, Nuristan, and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan.

Among others, the most vulnerable places are Badakhshan and Takhar, with the country’s highest vulnerability, making them prone to natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, flooding, and avalanches.
