At least twenty four school girls have been poisoned in a school in Lashkargah city, the provincial capital of the restive Helmand province.

According to the local officials, the school girls in Lashkargah’s Central School were poisoned due to unknown reasons.

Provincial Public Health Director Aminullah Abid cofirmed that twenty four school girls have been admitted to the Central Hospital with poisoning symptoms.

He said the school girls are currently being treated in the hospital and their condition has been reported as stable.

Provincial police officials also confirmed that twenty four school girls have been poisoned in Lashkargah Central School but do not provide further information regarding the possible cause.

The Helmand Security Chief Guli Khan said an investigation is underway regarding the incident and more information will be released later.

Helmand is among the relatively volatile provinces in South of Afghanistan where the Taliban insurgents are actively operating in some of its districts and often carry out insurgency activities.

However, it has yet not been ascertained whether the group has any links with today’s incident or not.
