The Taliban official claims that 21 million people in Afghanistan lack access to clean drinking water due to climate change.

Abdul Salam Haqani, the Deputy Head of the Taliban’s Environmental Department, stated on Monday, January 5th, that the wars have caused Afghanistan to suffer “serious harm” from climate change.

Previously, the United Nations had announced that climate change had reduced people’s access to water throughout Afghanistan.

The organization held a meeting in the city of Herat in May this year that focused on climate impacts in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is one of the countries with the lowest readiness to cope with climate change-induced shocks.

According to the latest assessments, Afghanistan ranks sixth as the most climate-vulnerable country in the world.

UN findings indicate that rural communities in Afghanistan have faced countless environmental challenges in recent years due to drought, floods, and landslides.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Higher Education and the National Environmental Protection Agency have announced in a joint press conference that an international climate change conference will be held next week at Nangarhar University.

Dr. Latifullah Khairkhwa, the Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Higher Education, stated on Monday, January 5th, that Nangarhar University will host an international conference on climate change next week.

The conference coincides with Afghanistan’s worst drought in 30 years, which is expected to have a severe impact on the country’s agriculture-based economy and food security. Additionally, decades of war have left Afghans highly vulnerable to climate change due to the destruction of socio-economic infrastructure.
