At least seven soldiers of the Afghan National Army (ANA) forces were martyred in an attack by the militants in western Herat province of Afghanistan.

The local officials confirmed that the soldiers lost an overnight attack by the militants on security check posts in Zawal district.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Jilani Farhad confirmed the incident and the death toll of the armed forces, saying another soldier was also wounded during the clashes.

Farhad further added that the militants have also suffered casualties but there are no reports available regarding the exact death toll of the militants.

The anti-government armed militant groups including Taliban insurgents have not commented regarding the report so far.

The latest deadly attack on army posts in Herat takes place amid ongoing efforts to reduce the violence through negotiations and reconciliation.

In a bid to pave the way for the revival of the talks, President Ghani on Thursday declared a ceasefire with the Taliban and said no offensive operations would be carried out during the ceasefire period ending on 5th day of Eid.
