14 members of a single family killed in Kunduz explosion

Explosion in Kunduz provinceAt least 14 civilians were killed following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in northern Kunduz province on Monday.

A spokesman for the provincial police department, Syed Sarwar Hussaini said the victims of the incident were members of a single family.

Mr. Hussaini further added that the incident took place in Khanabad district after the vehicle of a police commander struck with the improvised explosive device.

The target of the explosion was the local police commander Mohammad Omar Aqtash, however he escaped the attack unhurt.

The local police commander Mohammad Omar confirmed 14 members of his family were killed following the explosion, and another member of his family was critically injured.

In a separate explosion, head of the criminal investigation department for Khanabad district Islam Hussain was killed and three policemen were injured.

Taliban militants group frequently use improvised explosive device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target Afghan and coalition security forces which normally leads to civilian casualties.
