12 killed and injured in northern Salang avalanche breakups


At least 2 people were killed and more than 10 others were trapped following avalanche breakups in northern Salang during the past 24 hours.

Provincial Security Chief for northern Baghlan province Gen. Asadullah Shirzad said, the trapped civilians were taken out by Afghan police and were taken to hospital for treatment purposes.

He also added, Salang highway is closed and at least 3 avalanche breakups have taken place in northern Salang pass with fears of more avalanche breakups due heavy typhoons in the area.

In the meantime reports suggest several avalanche breakups have taken place in southern Salang Pass where at least 6 vehicles have been trapped under the snow.

Reports on casualties have not been disclosed by Afghan officials so far.

This comes as at least 45 people were reported to be trapped under snow following avalanche breakups in eastern Nuristan province.

According to local officials, the avalanche breakups took  place at Poshal and Gadoi areas in Mandol district in this province.

Zareen Nuristan a governor media official said, there are no news regarding the fate of 45 people including women and children who were trapped under the snow.

He also said, search and rescue operation have been launched to take out those trapped under the snow.

Qazi Mohammad Nabi Ahmadi Deputy provincial governor confirming the report said, heavy snow fall is continuing in this province during the past 3 days which has closed the highways between Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

He also said, a number of victims have been taken out of snow and urged the governmental and non-governmental organizations to assist those who suffered from the avalanche breakups.
