The police officials in Sri Lanka have confirmed that the death toll from from a series of explosions in the country has climbed to at least 290 people.
Back to back explosions ripped through churches and luxury hotels early on Sunday with reports suggesting several foreigners are also among those killed or wounded.
A police official had earlier told Reuters that more than 50 people were killed in just one church, St. Sebastian’s in Katuwapitiya, north of Colombo.
In the meantime, the local media outlets have reported that 35 people were killed in another explosion which targeted a church in eastern Batticaloa city.
No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the explosions.
Similar explosions have also taken place in Shangri-La Colombo, Kingsbury Hotel and Cinnamon Grand Colombo.
Colombo National Hospital Director Samindi Samrakoon has told Reuters that she knew of at least 20 deaths and 280 people wounded in the capital.
