Turkey shoots down Russian Su-24 fighter jet

Russian shot down by TurkeyA Russian Su-24 fighter jet has been shot down on the Turkish-Syrian border with the Turkish officials saying the plane was shot after it entered the Turkish airspace, the officials said.

Quoting defense officials, the state-run Sputnik International report that the “Su-24 of the Russian aviation group has crashed in the Syrian Arab Republic after alleged fire from the ground.”

The report further added that the plane was gunned down from the ground, citing preliminary reports.

The Ministry of Defense of Russia said the Su-24 bomber jet was in Syrian airspace at the altitude 6,000 meters. The pilots were reportedly able to parachute out of the jet before it crashed.

A statement by Ministry of Defense of Russia said “The plane was located at an altitude of 6,000 meters. The fate of the pilots is still unknown. According to the preliminary data, the pilots were able to eject. The circumstances of the plane’s crash are under investigation. The Russian Ministry of Defense notes that during the flight the plane was located strictly in the Syrian airspace. It was registered.”

However, the Turkish army officials say the Russian plane had violated the country’s air space close to the Syrian border and was shot down after ignoring several warnings.

According to the Turkish officials, the plane was shot down earlier this morning with an F-16 fighter jet.
