Taliban gain access to modern weapons in Nuristan

Local authorities in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan expressed concerns regarding Taliban militants access to modern weapons to attack Afghan security forces.

Gen. Ghullamullah provincial security chief said an Afghan police officer was shot dead by Taliban militants on Wednesday using a Dragunov sniper rifle.

Taliban militants have gained access to such weapons in Barg-e-Matal district.

The incident on Wednesday took place in the central city of Barg-e-Matal district and according to Gen. Ghulamullah the Afghan police officer was shot dead from Southwestern part of the district.

He said it seems a number of Taliban militants were also killed after Afghan police forces opened fire towards the area where Taliban militants opened fire on Afghan police officer.

Gen. Ghullamullah said Taliban militants have recently imported the weapons from Pakistan which has a high accuracy to target the security forces.

Even Afghan security forces do not have access to such weapons in eastern Nuristan province. According to reports at least 5 Afghan police officers have been shot dead using Dragunov sniper rifle during the past one month in this province.

At least 3 Afghan police officers and an Afghan soldier were shot dead by Dragunov sniper rifle recently.
