Taliban attack security check post in Badakhshan

According to local authorities in north-eastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan, a number of Taliban militants on ambushed a police check post on Thursday night in Wardaj district.

District police chief Asadullah confirming the report said at least 4 Afghan police officers were killed and 2 others were injured following the clashes.

He said the security check point was under the control of the Afghan public protection forces.

Wardaj district is one of the volatile regions in north-eastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan where militants are frequently carrying out insurgency activities.

This comes as at least 8 Afghan police officers were killed after Taliban militants ambushed Afghan security forces in Kohi-e-Ghanio area in this district.

In a separate incident earlier Taliban militants kidnapped 16 Afghan police officers and killed 4 of them in Bashin area of Wardaj district.

In the meantime provincial security chief Ghulam Sakhi Haidari said a number of Taliban militants were also killed during the clashes last night.

He said Taliban militants were forced to leave the area after Afghan public protection forces resisted the Taliban fighters for several hours.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid said Taliban fighters killed 9 Afghan police officers and conquered the check post.

However provincial security chief Ghulam Sakhi Hairday denied the claims by Zabiullah Mujahid and said at least 7 Taliban militants were injured and the secuirty check post is under the control of the Afghan security forces.
