Spanish prime minister in surprise visit to Afghanistan

Spanish prime minister Mariano RajoySpanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy following an unannounced visit arrived to Afghanistan on Saturday.

According to reports Prime Minister Maiano Rajoy is due to visit Afghan president Hamid Karzai and meet with the troops based in Afghanistan for Christmas celebrations.

He is also accompanied by Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes and is his first visit to the country since his right-wing government came to power a year ago.

Spain has currently deployed around 521 troops under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan based in capital Kabul and western Herat province of Afghanistan.

Rajoy will visit Spanish troops in capital Kabul at NATO headquarters and will later visit Herat province of AFgahnistan to meet with the Spanish logistics base before heading on to the Qala-i-naw base in the northeast.
