Sartaj Aziz visits Kabul to invite Karzai to Pakistan

Sartaj Aziz visits AfghanistanSartaj Aziz, adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security to Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to visit Afghanistan on coming Saturday to to prepare for President Hamid Karzai’s visit to Islamabad.

While speaking during a press conference with with the British foreign secretary, William Hague, at the Foreign Office Sartaj Aziz said, “We are committed to peace and stability in Afghanistan which is of vital importance to Pakistan. Our government will take all steps for regional peace and stability.”

He remarked in his opening statement. “I will be visiting Kabul on Saturday.”

Pakistan and Britain on Wednesday decided to enhance their efforts and cooperation to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan, by complementing their support to the Afghan-led peace process.

In response to a question regarding the Taliban’s Doha office which was closed by Taliban, Sartaj Aziz said the Doha office by Taliban was a temporary phenomenon and hoped that it would reopen when difficulties were overcome.

Insisting on Afghan peace process he said, “Peace and reconciliation is the only way forward to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan. There will be challenges, but we need patience and perseverance in the larger interest of peace in Afghanistan. All stakeholders in the Afghan peace process would need to engage constructively.”

British foreign secretary, William Hague said, good relations with Pakistan’s neighbour were key to security and the two sides agreed on the importance of peace, stability and security in Afghanistan.

He said they supported an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

  1. Why cant Aziz just phone Karzai, and invite him, does he have to go to Kabul??.
