It was one of the deadliest attacks ever against the army in the North Waziristan tribal area, a major trouble spot that the military has been reluctant to tackle. The remote area is home to Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda militants at war with the government.
But it is also used as a sanctuary by other militants who have focused their attacks in neighboring Afghanistan rather than Pakistan.
One vehicle was completely destroyed in the attack and Helicopters arrived at the scene of the blast, reportedly helping to ferry the wounded to hospital.
On Saturday, Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, had circulated a leaflet calling for an end to the Taliban’s infrequent attacks on Pakistani soldiers in North Waziristan.
Thousands of Pakistani soldiers are stationed in North Waziristan and have been battling the Taliban in the mountains of North Waziristan for years.
More recently, US forces have used drone strikes in the region as part of their campaign against the Taliban across the border in Afghanistan.
