The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has released an online wanted post of Shokofa Salehi, a 22-year-old woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a private bank in Afghanistan.
Shokofa Salehi used to work in Azizi Bank in Kabul, and is alleged to have transferred $1.1 million to her relatives in Dubai. Her photo was posted online by Interpol after she fled the country and went missing.
She is described as English and Farsi speaking on her wanted poster, and two of her relatives who had invested around $850,000 in a tyre company have reportedly been arrested last week.
Shokofa Salehi, 22, worked in the money transfer division at the headquarters of Azizi Bank in Kabul. She disappeared around two months ago.
The alleged theft by the Azizi Bank employee highlights the deep corruption in Afghanistan’s banking sector, which already saw one leading institution unravel after revelations of massive fraud.
