The shops will be opened by Abdelaziz Aouragh, whose Dutch halal sex shop El Asira is famous for its sensual oils, in partnership with German adult entertainment giant Beate Uhse.
The shops will “strictly cater to Muslim customers in Mecca” and are being opened after due consultation with Saudi clerics, who have approved it as ‘halal’, according to an Arabic news portal Alyaoum 24.
Aouragh is told AFP that he was told by a Saudi Arabian cleric that opening of a “halal” sex shop would lead to “the improvement of the sexual relationship between husband and wife”.
“Our products do include items that increase feelings of sensuality and improve the atmosphere between the couple in the sexual relationship between them,” Aouragh said.
At least 18 ‘Islamically-approved’ toys would be sold in the shops but will not be offering vibrators, as Islam does not allow them.
An American scholar, Hamza Yousuf, told Foreign Policy that Islam is not repressive about sex – in contrast to popular belief – and both the Quran and hadith encourage sex as long as it is within the confines of marriage.
