Pakistan drops attempted murder case against 9-month-old baby

A court in Pakistan has dropped an attempted murder case against a 9-month-old baby on Saturday.

The nine-month-old Musa Khan appeared in court in Lahore for a second time on charges of planning a murder, threatening police and interfering in state affairs.

Musa was charged along with his father and grandfather for allegedly being part of a group of slum residents who threw stones at gas company workers who were trying to disconnect homes from gas service for nonpayment of bills.

His Irfan Sadiq told Reuters news agency, “Police told the court that the nomination of Musa in the case of attacking police and gas company officials was a human error and Musa is not required.”

However, Musa Khan’s grandfather, Muhammad Yasin and his three sons still face the charges.

Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of Punjab Province and the brother of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for an inquiry after pictures taken at an earlier court hearing of Musa crying as he was being fingerprinted provoked widespread ridicule.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rana Jabbar said the assistant superintendent who filed the charges has since been removed from their position.

Women should be hanged for adultery, rapists should be forgiven: Indian politician

The remarks by an Indian politician have sparked outraged after he claimed that the women who have sex outside marriage should be hanged and that men who committed rape should be forgiven their “mistakes”.

Addressing a rally in Moradabad Mulayam Singh Yadav, head of the Socialist Party (SP) said Thursday that he would scrap a recently introduced law that fixed the death penalty for rapists.

Yadav said men should not face the death penalty as it was not uncommon for boys to make mistakes. “Boys will be boys. Following a girl-boy fight, the girl complains she was raped,” he said in the city of Moradabad.

The comments by Yadav sparked outcry from women’s rights campaigners and commentators, as well as his political opponents.

Social activist Kiran Bedi quoted by India’s Zee News said, “These statements call for total boycott of such a political leader. People should be asked to vote out such people completely.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flayed Mulayam Singh for his “insensitive and shameful” statement.

State spokesman for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vijay Bahadur Pathak said the former chief minister’s comments were unacceptable and very sad.

The comments by Yadav also outraged the Indian media with newspapers and websites are criticising Mr Yadav for his “insensitive and unfortunate” comment.

The Times of Idia website said, “Mulayam Singh Yadav sinks to a new low, defends rapists to woo voters. Even by his misogynistic standards, he seems to have sunk to a new low… The change in the laws was brought on after months of selfless demonstration by citizens striving to bring about a change in India’s social outlook.”

Hindustan Times says Mr Yadav’s statement has come “at a time when women’s security has emerged as one of the key issues in the elections, especially against the backdrop of the 16 December (2012) gang rape of a paramedical student in Delhi.”

Pakistani officials hold first ever direct talks with Taliban group

According to reports, Pakistani negotiators and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commanders have for the first met in Miranshah to hold peace talks.

The meeting which took place in a secret location was attended by three government officials and a former ambassador.

Neither the Pakistani officials nor the members of the Pakistan Taliban’s shura have publicized the agenda of the meeting which concluded on Wednesday.

The team of the Pakistani officials travelled to the area near the Afghan border by helicopter.

It was the first direct contact between the two sides since peace moves began last month due to the efforts by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Sharif has been pushing to find a way to end the insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives since 2007 after the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) started waging insurgency.

In the meantime, reports suggest that the government team wants to secure a three-month ceasefire and the freeing of prisoners before talks go further.

This comes as Taliban commanders had recently demanded the release of relatives they claim are held by the state and have also called for the imposition of Islamic law across the country.

Former ISI chief knew of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan: NYT

The former chief of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha knew of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan.

According to a report by New York Times, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba Hafiz Muhammad Saeed was also in regular contact with the slain al Qaeda chief in Pakistan.

Soon after the US Navy SEAL raid on bin Laden’s house, “a Pakistani official told me the US had direct evidence that the ISI chief, Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha, knew of Bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad,” the New York Times reported in an article by senior journalist Carlotta Gall.

“The information came from a senior US official, and I guessed that the Americans had intercepted a phone call of Pasha’s or one about him in the days after the raid”, Gall wrote in the article.

Gall covered Afghanistan and Pakistan for the paper from 2001 to 2013 in the article titled ‘What Pakistan Knew About Bin Laden’, adapted from the book ‘The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan, 2001-2014′, to be published next month.

The Pakistani official quoted in the article said, “He knew of Osama’s whereabouts, yes. Pasha was always their blue-eyed boy.”

The official further added that he was surprised to hear this. But in the weeks and months after the raid, Pasha and the ISI press office strenuously denied that they had any knowledge of bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad.

Pakistan’s foreign office or other government institutions have not commented regarding the report so far. However, Pakistani intelligence officials have denied the report and said there is no truth in New York Times story.

“According to one inside source, the ISI actually ran a special desk assigned to handle Bin Laden. It was operated independently, led by an officer who made his own decisions and did not report to a superior,” New York Times added in its report.

Osama bin Laden was shot dead during a raid conducted by US commandos in May 2012 in the garrison city of Abbottabad.

Kashmir Event Held in Washington, D.C.
By Manish Rai
Washington, D.C. February 15, 2104. “Our efforts should be to persuade the world community including the United States to urge both India and Pakistan to include the leadership of the people of Jammu & Kashmir in the negotiations to peacefully resolve the dispute over Kashmir. When we talk of Kashmir, we talk of the sentiments and enormous sacrifices made by the Kashmiri people during the past 67 years for a cause dear to all inhabitants, be they Muslims, Hindus, or Buddhists.  It is time that both India and Pakistan realize that until the Kashmiri leadership is included in the peace process, these negotiations between India and Pakistan may not lead them to any logical conclusion,” said Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai at a seminar, held at Holiday Inn Hotel and organized by Kashmir Form, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Fai stressed “I do not doubt for a minute that to regain much of what has been lost, the people of Kashmir are determined to present their peaceful objectives to the international community.  Their objective is to seek a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict through dialogue, with the participation of all parties – Government of India, Government of Pakistan and the people of Kashmir.  Their view is one of inclusion.  They believe that there is nothing to be gained by isolating groups with varying opinions.”
Dr. Ghulam Nabi Mir, the President of the World Kashmir Freedom Movement said that there exist apprehensions that, whether on account of its internal weakness or under external pressure, Pakistan will be forced to dilute its stand on Kashmir. If this happens, it will not end the dispute because Kashmiris will not consent to rule by a power that has visited death and destruction to brutalize them into submission from the very beginning when the first Indian soldier set afoot on the soil of Kashmir.
Peer Sahib Ali Raza Bukhari said that Kashmir is sacred cause because its legality has been recognized by the United Nations. He reiterated that India and Pakistan both being nuclear-weapon states are directly confronting each other, which makes the Kashmir dispute potentially the most dangerous in the world.  It should, therefore, be a major interest of the U.S. to prevent this dispute from exploding into a conflict which can be catastrophic for a large proportion of the human race.
Sardar Sawar Khan, former Advisor to the Prime Minister of AJK said, “I firmly believe that far too long has the world viewed Jammu & Kashmir dispute from the perspective of India and Pakistan and never from the perspective of the people of Kashmir that are directly affected by the problem day after day on the ground. And I believe that to ignore the Kashmiri viewpoint is a big mistake. The international community must take into account the Kashmiri perspective which I believe is more important than the perspective of India or Pakistan and for that matter more important than the perspective of the international community.”
Lars Rise, Norwegian parliamentarian said, “I have visited Kashmir and met with the leadership of All Parties Hurriyet Conference. I have come to Washington and attended the International Peace Conferences organized by Dr. Fai at the Capitol Hill. I am sure that given a chance, the people of Kashmir will be instrumental in building a bridge between India and Pakistan to settle the long-standing dispute over Kashmir through peaceful negotiations. “ Kashmiris  have a long tradition of peace and religious tolerance, Lars Rise added.
Dr. Imtiaz Khan, Vice President of the Kashmiri American Council demanded that the Government of India must  release all political prisoners; repeal all black laws, particularly Public Safety Act, & Jammu and Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act, etc.; dismantle  bunkers from villages and towns; and give freedom of expression and freedom of speech to Kashmiris. A suppression of the freedom of opinion and assembly means empowering terroristic elements.  This in turn paves the way for destabilizing Pakistan – something that is certainly not in India’s own interest, nor in the interest of the United States.
Sardar Tahir Iqbal, the President of Kashmir Forum said that the people of Kashmir have the birthright to express their sentiments and their opinions and they should be allowed to demonstrate peacefully to demand their right of self-determination. The United States should  definitely recommend improving the atmosphere in Kashmir by a full restoration of civil liberties, including the liberty to express themselves peacefully on the question of their own future.
Dr. Zulfiqar Kazmi said that Pakistan as a party to the dispute must have a consist policy on Kashmir. He emphasized that the Kashmir dispute primarily involves the life and future of the people of the land.  Because of its impact on relations between India and Pakistan, however, it directly affects the peace and stability of more than 1.2 billion people of the South-Asian subcontinent.
Dr. Zahid Bukhari, former President of ICNA suggested that friends of Kashmir must educate the American policy makers about the ground realities in Kashmir. We need to seek the understanding of the American policy making agencies to help resolve the dispute according to the wishes and aspirations of the people of Kashmir. Dr. Bukhari called on world powers to persuade both India and Pakistan to accede to international law in Kashmir, to cooperate in holding a referendum administered by a neutral agency, and to welcome third party intervention or mediation to solve any prickly details.
Sardar Gulfaraz Khan said that nothing better could be said about human rights in Kashmir.  Every human rights group that has examined the convulsed scene in Kashmir has reported harrowing human rights violations, including tens of thousands of extrajudicial killings, rape, torture, plunder, arbitrary arrests, and ruthless suppression of free speech and press.  The United States State Department annual human rights report invariably paints an ugly human rights dispensation in Kashmir.
Sardar Zubair Khan said that a promising first step towards a just and peaceful denouement of the Kashmir tragedy would be the recognition by the United States, Pakistan and India of the All‑Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC) as the genuine voice of the Kashmiri people.
Sardar Zarif Khan said that today the consensus is that Kashmir conflict remains the underlying cause of the nuclear confrontation between the two neighboring countries. Without a just and lasting peace in Kashmir that vindicates self‑determination, trying to reduce missile and nuclear arsenals in South Asia will be an exercise in futility.
Mian Wasin elaborated that the issue of Kashmir is by no definition a border dispute between India and Pakistan. The issue of Kashmir is a problem resolving around the lives of 18 million people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Kashmiri leadership must be the part and parcel of any peace negotiations.
Asad Choudhary, PMLN said  that we feel honored to help our brethren in Jammu & Kashmir. We believe that it is only fair that the Kashmir dispute must be decided in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions. We must accept whatever the people of Kashmir decide.
Mazhar Chugtai, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf suggested taking an initiative to educate the U.S. Administration about the situation in Kashmir. He said that the Kashmir dispute is one of the oldest issues pending on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council. The Kashmiri people have suffered since the issue was first debated at the United Nations in 1948. The wishes of the Kashmiri people must be taken into consideration in seeking any settlement of the dispute.
Sardar Mohammad Zahid of New York urged the world community to put an end to the human rights violations in Jammu & Kashmir. He said that millions of people on the streets of Srinagar demand noting short of Azaadi. We must not let them down.
10-year-old student Hashim Khan of Maryland said that the people of Jammu & Kashmir want Azaadi (freedom). Our message to the people of Kashmir is: Continue your peaceful struggle; Freedom is ours; and Don’t compromise on your basic principle of self-determination.
Sardar Zulfiqar Khan, while moderating the seminar said that the situation in Kashmir demand that the world powers must strengthen the non-violent and indigenous movement in Kashmir.
Those who spoke at the seminar also included Raja Liaqat Kayani; Sardar Zahoor Khan; Aurang Zeb Khan, MQM; Sardar Ishaq Sharif, JKLF; Zahid Hamidi; Arifullah; Sardar Ali; Asad Kamal.
The event was co-sponsored by Kashmiri American Council; Peoples Party of Pakistan, Azad Kashmir; Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conferences; Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front; Jammu Kashmir Muslim League; Jamaat-e-Islamic Azad Kashmir; and Jammu Kashmir Liberation League.

Clashes over Valentine’s Day celebration in Pakistan leaves 4 injured

According to reports, at least four university students were injured following clashes between two rival student groups in Pakistan.

Police officials in Pakistan said the incident took place in country’s northwest over celebration fo Valentine’s Day.

A local police official, Rahim Hussain, said clashes between the two groups started in University of Peshawar after a liberal group rallied in the favor of the romantic holiday.

Mr. Hussain further added that both members of the liberal group and conservative group started throwing stones at each other and used weapons to fire in the air.

He confirmed that four students were injured following the clashes which lasted for several minutes.

The young are increasingly using Valentine’s Day as a form of rebellion – some call it a silent revolution of sorts, despite conservatives in Pakistan every year call for people to boycott Valentine’s Day.

In a devout Muslim society where adultery is punishable by death and public displays of love are forbidden, celebrating on this day is a direct challenge to the rigid Islamic groups that hold sway in the country and who deem such displays as immoral.

However, the holiday is still widely celebrated in Pakistan where people buy flowers, pink teddy bears and heart-shaped balloons.

A Pakistani religious cleric, Maulana Abdul Aziz has said that the Taliban group in Pakistan has as many as 500 female suicide bombers ready to act.

Maulana Abdul Aziz is the former head cleric of Islamabd’s Lal Masjid and is currently representing the Pakistani Taliban grop – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in peace talks with the government of Pakistan.

While pointing towards the risk of further violence if talks fails, Maulana Aziz said that the Taliban group has nearly 400 to 500 female suicide bombers in Waziristan and other tribal areas, the Bloomberg News reported.

Negotiations between the Taliban group and Pakistan’s government started last week, however Maulana Aziz says that the Taliban group has no urgency to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Maulana Aziz also added that the Taliban group in Pakistan is keen to implement Sharia law in the country.

He ruled out the group’s motive to fight because of the presence of US troops in Afghanistan and insisted that the group is only fighting to implement Sharia law.

The Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif revived peace talks with the Taliban – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan as pressure grow for a military strike following deadly attacks which left nearly two dozen soldier dead last month.

Nearly 40,000 Pakistanis have been killed since the group launched its offensive in Pakistan in 2001.

A deadly blast left at least 10 people dead and nearly 42 others injured in Pakistan’s Peshawar city late Tuesday, officials said.

The incident took place in outside a hotel frequented by Shias in Qesa Khwani Bazaar, after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Local police officials, said women and children were among those killed or injured in Tuesday’s suicide attack, and majority of the victims are Shias.

At least 35 men, 5 children and 2 women were injured following the blast, Superintendent Police (SP) City Muhammad Faisal Mukhtar said.

Shafqat Malik, chief of Peshawar’s bomb disposal unit, confirmed the explosion was a suicide blast.

The blast occurred at a time when Pakistan’s elected government had offered negotiations to the Pakistani Taliban, who have wedged a bloody campaign against the state by attacking government installations and carrying out suicide blasts in places of worship and markets.

However, a spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Shahidullah Shahid, said that the Taliban group had no connection to the blast.

Pakistan sentences man to death who claimed to be prophet of Islam

A court in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi has sentenced a 65-year-old British to death after he was found guilty of blasphemy.

Mohammad Asghar, a British national of Pakistani origin, was arrested in Sadiqabad in 2010 by police forces for writing letters claiming to be a prophet.

Asghar was sentenced on Friday, however his lawyers argued for leniency saying he has a history of mental illness, but this was rejected by a medical panel.

But the special court inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where Asghar is being held, rejected defence claims that the 65-year-old has mental health problems.

“Asghar claimed to be a prophet even inside the court. He confessed it in front of the judge,” Javed Gul, a government prosecutor, told AFP.

“Asghar used to write it even on his visiting card,” Gul added.

The controversial blasphemy laws of Pakistan carry a potential death sentence for anyone deemed to have insulted Islam.

The application of blasphemy laws on several recent cases have prompted international concerns.

However, Asghar is unlikely to be executed as Pakistan had a de facto moratorium on civilian hangings since 2008 and only one person has been executed since then, a soldier convicted by court martial.

Village elders order gang-rape of Indian girl for having love affair

Police in India’s West Bengal state announced that 20-year-old woman is lying in critical condition in hospital in the Indian state of West Bengal after she was allegedly gang-raped by at least a dozen men.

The woman was reportedly gang-raped on the orders of a “salishi sabha” – a traditional tribunal in Birbhum district of Bengal state.

Village elders ordered gang-rape because woman fell in love with a man from a different religion.

Police official C. Sudhakar said that 13 men have been arrested in connection with the case.

The headman of the tribunal allegedly ordered the rape when the woman’s family refused or were unable to pay the fine of 50,000 rupees which is equivalent to $800.

This comes as a teenage girl from the same area was forced by villagers to walk naked through four villages for having an affair, nearly four years ago.

High-profile rapes in India during the one year has sparked widespread outrage over chronic sexual violence in the country and government failures to protect women.

However, the latest case in West Bengal is particularly troubling because the alleged rape apparently was sanctioned by a council made up of village elders.

At least seven Pakistani security personnel were killed following an ambush by unknown gunmen in the restive province of Balochistan.

The security forces came under attack while they were providing security to a pair of Spanish round-the-world cyclists, who had entered the country from Iran.

According to the local security officials, the pair of the Spanish cyclists managed to escape the attack unhurt and sustained minor injuries when they fell off their bikes.

The attack came one day after militants in the same region killed 28 people in a bus convoy of Shiite Muslim pilgrims.

A local police officer said authorities suspected the same group carried out both attacks.

Provincial Home Secretary, Asadur Rehman Gilani confirming the report, said the Spanish cyclist had arrived in the town of Dalbandin, about 220 miles from Quetta, provincial capital of Baluchistan, on Tuesday evening after biking from the Iranian border.

Balochistan is known as one of the country’s most violent regions, having porous borders between neighboring Iran and Afghanistan.

The province is plagued by kidnappers, Taliban militants, a violent separatist insurgency, sectarian killers, paramilitary death squads and drug traffickers.

Police in the Indian capital Delhi have arrested four suspected individuals in connection to the gang-rape of a 51-year-old Danish woman.

The woman who was on a tour in India, was reportedly gang-raped by a group of men in Paharganj area near New Delhi railway station.

India to face same fate in Kashmir as US faced in Afghanistan: Hafiz Saeed

The leader of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah group Hafiz Mohammad Saeed said Sunday that India will face the same fate as United States has faced in Afghanistan, and Indian forces will be compelled to leave kashmir.

While addressing at a local media workshop in Islamabad, Saeed said, “America, that did not want to leave Afghanistan, is now forced to leave it. It had long plans in Central Asia.

It wanted to change the entire scenario in this region. It had plans to make this region its base and had further big aims. If my God failed it in its plans and now it has been forced to leave Afghanistan, then God willing, India will have to leave Kashmir.”

The workshop was organised by Defence of Pakistan Council, an alliance of about 40 religious and political parties, India Today reported.

Jamaat-ud-Dawah led by Hafiz Saeed is the humanitarian wing of the banned militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Saeed is an anti-India and anti-US religious cleric, who has been accsued of masterminding the 2008 attack on its financial capital, Mumbai, where gunmen killed 166 people over three days.

He is also the founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiban militant group which is banned in Pakistan and blacklisted by the United Nations.

According to reports, the United States has offered $10 million for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

In the meantime, Saeed accused India and United States behind growing violence in the region, and being against Pakistan government’s peace talks with the Tailban.

Saeed said, “India and America don’t want these talks to take place at any cost. They do not want peace in this region. They have set up plans. They don’t want drone strikes to stop so that there be a reason for suicide attacks.”

The Pakistani Foreign Office officials have warned to take up the issue of US drone strikes with the Human Rights Council.

The threat is followed by a fresh US drone strike in Miramshah, North Waziristan late Wednesday night, which left at least four people dead.

Tasneem Aslam, spokesperson for the Foreign Office of Pakistan said a resolution would be tabled at the forum in Geneva. “The government strongly condemns the US drone strike that took place near Miramshah in North Waziristan around midnight,” Aslam quoted by The Express Tribune said.

Aslam further added, “These strikes are a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is a consensus in Pakistan that these strikes must end.”

“Such strikes also set dangerous precedents in inter-state relations,” Aslam said, adding, “These strikes have a negative impact on the government’s efforts to bring peace and stability in Pakistan and the region.”

In response to a question regarding the death of any high-value militant, ASlam said, “Using a method which is fundamentally flawed and illegal even for a positive purpose cannot be justified. Therefore, it is not our policy to show leniency in such instances, even if some high-value target is killed.”

The police officials further added that the woman was initially abducted by a group of three men and was raped by one of them.

The assault came days after India marked the anniversary of the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.

The 23-year-old student in New Delh died on December 29, nearly two weeks after being attacked by a gang of six men on a moving bus as she returned home from the cinema with a male companion.

Four attackers in the New Delhi case were sentenced to death and a juvenile was sent to a reform centre for three years.

According to Pakistani security officials, at least four suspected militants were killed following a US drone strike in North Waziristan late Wednesday night.

A senior local security official said a US drone fired two missiles at a compound near Miramshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal agency bordering Afghanistan.

The official further added that four militants were killed and another was critically injured following the drone strike.

This comes as another security official told AFP that three suspected militants were killed following the airstrike. “A US drone fired two missiles on a militant compound, killing at least three suspected insurgents,” the official said.

The identities of those killed in the strike were not immediately known but officials suspect that they were of Afghan origin.

Wednesday’s drone strike was first attack in the area during the month. At least six people were killed following a US drone strike on a seminary linked to the Haqqani Network in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provine last month.

Drone strikes have long been source of friction between Islamabad and Washington. Islamabad criticizes drone strikes as a violation of sovereignty and counterproductive to anti-terror efforts.

Indian government has started to train Afghan commandos as 2014 arrives.

Around 60 members of Afghan Special forces get military training in deserts of Rajasthan, to get prepared for standing in the first war line, to fight for terrorism and insurgency after NATO forces withdrawal.

“The focus of the training is on conduct of counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations, with special emphasis on operations in built-up areas and rural areas in a realistic environment,” Colonel S.D.Goswami, a defense spokesman said.

This comes as India government has agreed to enhance defense and security cooperation between the two nations.

During the last visit of Hamid Karzai and meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi last Friday, India has committed to train Afghan military forces and equip them with the necessary weapons.

India is one of the largest donor countries for Afghanistan and has sustained a friendly relationship with Afghanistan government in the last 12 years.

Afpak: the ‘Strategic Depth’

By Gharanai Khwakhuzhi

The term ‘Strategic Depth’ has been word of mouth of recent, after it was brought up during a recent visit of an Afghan delegation to Pakistan attending Pakistan-Afghanistan Bilateral Conference hosted by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA).

The concept of Strategic Depth emerges from the realm of military operations which denotes the distance between enemy forces and the main center of gravity of a country (anything from a military base to economic and commercial hubs). For a military strategist the greater the distance to be traversed by enemy forces to reach these bases, the better are the chances of successful defense line and stance as the enemy in such situations end up in a war of attrition.

One of the best examples of such strategy emerges from German invasion of Soviet Union, where the Soviets traded space for time.

Another example of such policy is the Pakistani Strategic Depth.

As a professor at National Defense University of Pakistan and a military strategist, Gen. (ret) Mirza Aslam Beg, who would go on and become the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan replacing Gen. Zia ul Haq; in early 1980s while the Soviet involvement and engagement in Afghanistan was at its height and Indians had close ties and cooperation with the Soviets, decided to come up with a policy that will prevent an encirclement of Pakistan by its archival India in the East and a Soviet supported Afghanistan in the West.

The policy was to define the Strategic Depth of Pakistan in case of an India invasion. For this Pakistan would assist the Afghan opposition and install a Pakistan friendly government in Kabul and if India invades Pakistan, the Pakistani Army will fall back to Afghanistan so to inflict a War of Attrition on the Indians, thus making Afghanistan Pakistan’s Strategic Depth [de facto].

Mostly this Strategic Depth policy has been rejected by Pakistani establishment and even ridiculed at times by international military strategists, yet this has been the hot topic of recent days.

Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Pakistani National Security and Foreign Affairs Adviser, brought up the topic at a Senate briefing few days ago where he made it clear that Strategic Depth meant nothing for Pakistan and Afghanistan. Adding Afghanistan was free to make decisions about its political future on its own, that peaceful neighborhood was the top priority of the incumbent government, and that Pakistan was following the policy of non-interference in Afghanistan and not fighting proxy wars.

This made it clear that the idea of Strategic Depth still is on the minds of Pakistani strategists and politicians even though they are trying to overcome it and establish a new, cooperative and peaceful strategy towards Afghanistan.

Now to assess what could be best for both countries in a new strategy towards each other we should consider the recent developments in the region and the ever-growing economic dependency of the regional countries on each other. With this we can come up with a long-term solution and strategy that will counter the problems facing both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In order to accomplish this solution we could start with revers-engineering the 19th and 20th century policy of “Divide and Rule” with a pluralistic and integrative policy. A policy of integration and contexture of interests of different entities, in this case nations.

One of these interests not only for Afghanistan and Pakistan but also India is the urgent and ever-growing need of energy which has hindered the economic growth of the mentioned countries to great extents.

Projects such as CASA-1000 (Central Asia South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project) where electricity would be transmitted from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan, TAPI (Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India Pipeline) where the pipeline will transport Caspian Sea natural gas from Turkmenistan via Afghanistan into Pakistan and India, and the Kunar River Hydroelectric Dam which is a joint management of common rivers project between Afghanistan and Pakistan providing 1500MW of electricity once constructed; could be some steps toward countering the problem.

Beside the common interests of energy, APTTA (Afghanistan Pakistan Transit and Trade Agreement) is another project of mutual interest for both countries which opens doors for the traders of both countries as well as connecting Central Asia with South Asia. With Afghanistan recently becoming a member of International Union of Railways and with the growing railways infrastructure in Afghanistan, APTTA could play a key role in bringing the two regions (Central Asia and South Asia) closer.

The proposed idea of extending Pakistani Motorway to Afghanistan and the Asian Highway Network are some other ideas that could benefit not only the two nations but the region.

These are some of the projects that could make the two countries economically interdependent and with common and mutual interests I don’t see a reason why the two countries cannot walk on the same path parallel to each other in peace.

Now going back to the Strategic Depth policy, India is also developing and growing at a fast pace and would prefer a peaceful neighborhood for its future growth. And with economic dependency of it over Central Asian energy giants, it becomes an obvious urge for it to have cordial and close relations with Pakistan.

Pakistan not having India scratching its back, means Afghanistan would be no more the Strategic Depth of Pakistan military policy, resulting in a common and transparent desire of the two nations to fight terrorism that has been imported and installed in this region.

In conclusion I think adopting each others’ interests as your own will result in interdependency of nations, making a cooperative environment in the region.

We should also remember that the main and core reason behind the success of European integration as an union was the desire of the once conflicting nations to cooperate in sectors of trade and economy so to recover from the aftermaths of World War II.

If the Europeans can manage to live side by side in peace and prosperity after centuries of conflicts between the members of today’s European Union, then the regional countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and India can definitely do it, especially while considering the close history, culture and customs that the nations share with each other.

Execution of Islamist leader sparks violent protests in Bangladesh

The execution of an opposition leader convicted of war crimes has sparked a wave of violence across Bangladesh.

Abdul Quader Mollah, 65, was a top leader of the country’s biggest Islamic party – Jamaat-e-Islami and was convicted for war crimes that took place four decades ago.

An intelligence official speaking on the condition of anonymity said that the hanging of Abdul Quader Mollah took place Thursday night in a jail in Dhaka.

Mollah is the first person executed after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2010 began trying people suspected of war crimes. He was found guilty in February of having been a leader of a pro-Pakistan militia which fought against the country’s independence.

He was also convicted of rape, murder and mass murder, including the killing of more than 350 unarmed civilians.

According to police sources, two activists from the ruling Awami League were hacked to death in the southern town of Kalaroa early Friday.

Sources further added that street skirmishes in towns and cities were also reported as Jammat activists began firebombing train stations, set fire to pro-government businesses and blockaded roads.

Large numbers of police could be seen on the streets in Dhaka while there were no immediate reports of violence. Opposition groups in Bangladesh also called for a countrywide strike on Sunday, following the execution of an opposition politician.

Supreme Court in India makes gay sex illegal again

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday threw out a 2009 ruling by a lower court that had decriminalized gay sex. The ruling is seen as a major blow to gay rights in the world’s largest democracy.

India’s Supreme Court it was up to parliament to legislate on the issue, as only India’s parliament could change the law, by deleting a section of the penal code dating back to the 19th century.

Gay rights activitists, who were expecting the court simply to rubber-stamp the earelier ruling, were shocked by the move.

Arvind Narayan, one of the lawyers representing the consortium of gay rights groups quoted by Reuters sadi, “We see this as a betrayal of the very people the court is meant to defend and protect.”

“In our understanding, the Supreme Court has always sided with those who have no rights,” said Narayan who was defending the 2009 judgment.

The violators of the ruling could be punished with up to 10 years in jail, as per the section 377 of India’s penal code “sex against teh order of nature”, which is widely interpreted to mean homosexual sex.

Rights lawyer Colin Gonsalves told Reuters, “One would never expect the Supreme Court of India to make such a retrograde order, that is so against the trend internationally.”

“This takes us back to the dark ages. This is a day of mourning for us in India,” said Gonsalves.

Protests were expected by gay community, which is still largely closeted but was emboldened by the 2009 ruling. Homosexuality has long been a taboo subject in a deeply conservative India, where many still regard it as a mental illness.

However, the gay community in India has worked to raise its profile in recent years, by organizing gay pride marches in cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai that have created awareness and encouraged many to come out of the closet.

Pentagon officials announced Tuesday that the ground shipments by US military have been halted via key Pakistan supply route due to security issues.

Pentagon spokesman Mark Wright said, the step was taken to ensure the safety of the drivers following protests in Pakistan over US drone strikes.

“We are aware protests have affected one of the primary commercial transit routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Pentagon spokesman Mark Wright told Reuters.

Wright further added, “We have voluntarily halted U.S. shipments of retrograde cargo … to ensure the safety of the drivers contracted to move our equipment.”

However, he added that retorgrade shipments could be resumed through Pakistani route in the near future.

The Torkham gate located on Pakistan and Afghanistan border is considered to be crucial for the United States and coalition security forces as the alliance is winding down combat mission in Afghanistan.

In the meantime, Pentagon spokesman Mark Wright pointed out that the United States has other options to move equipment out of the country, however other options including northern distribution network through Russia and Central Asia are far more costly.

At least 11 Pakistani teachers have reportedly been kidnapped by Pakistani militants for their involvement in polio vaccination campaign for school children.

According to the local government officials, the incident took place Saturday in Khyber tribal agency, along the border with Afghanistan.

Khyali Gul , a local official in the area said the teachers were kidnapped by gunmen from ira Public School in the Bara area of Khyber tribal agency, and were taken to an area controlled by militant leader Mangal Bagh and his Taliban-affiliated Lashkar-e-Islam group.

“Mangal Bagh and his men are opposing polio vaccination for children and don’t allow teams to immunize children in their areas,” Gul quoted by Reuters said.

Another local official also confirmed that the teachers were kidnapped by militants, and were taken to an area where security forces can not enter.

Vaccination workers are frequently targeted by militants in Pakistan, accusing the health workers over espionage charges to the West.

Militants group in Pakistan also accuse the health workers, particularly the vaccination workers for plotting conspiracies to sterilize the Muslim.

According to reports, the Taliban group in Pakistan – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has elected Mullah Fazlullah to lead the Taliban group in Pakistan.

A member of the Pakistani Taliban, Asmatullah Shaheen confirmed that Fazlullah was elected as the new chief of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Shaheen quoted by AFP said, “The decision was taken at a shura (council) meeting today. The supreme shura has also elected Sheikh Khalid Haqqani as the deputy chief of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan.”

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid also confirmed the appoinment of Mullah Fazlullah as the new TTP chief. “Following proper consultations … we chose our senior commander Mullah Fazlullah as our new ameer (leader),” Shahid quoted by Reuters said.

Mullah Fazlullah is a hardline Taliban leader who was in charge of Swall. His election further dampens expectations of any peace deal between the insurgents and the Pakistani government.

“There will be no more talks as Mullah Fazlullah is already against negotiations with the Pakistan government,” said the Taliban group spokesman.

Fazlullah was elected as the new Taliban chief a week after Hakimullah Mehsud was killed during a US drone strike in Northern Waziristan.

India launches robotic spacecraft towards Mars planet

India on Tuesday successfully launched a robotic spacecraft towards Mars planet with an aim to join the world’s deep-space pioneers with a journey to the Red Planet.

India will become the fourth country or group of countries to reach the Red Planet and first country in South Asia to launch space craft to Mars Planet to carry out experiments.

K. Radhakrishnan, chairman of the Indian Space and Research Organization said it has been humankind’s quest from the beginning to understand about universe and the solar system where we live in.

Mangalyaan – Mars craft took off at 09:08 GMT atop an Indian-built rocket from Sriharikota, and the tracking signals will be coming from one of the two ships fitted with special antennae positioned somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean.

The spacecraft will reach Mars orbit in September 2014 after undergoing some 300 days of complex manoeuvring, if launch goes well.

Mangalyaan was developed from technology tested during the recent lunar orbiter mission. An evolved version of India’s domestically developed Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, with extended rockets, will take Mangalyaan into an elliptical arc around the Earth.

India is aiming to join Mars arena amid growing international space race which has become far more competitive and globalized, and a growing number of countries and commercial entities have set their sights on sending a manned mission to Mars sometime in the next two decades.

The US space agency hopes to launch a human mission to Mars by 2030, NASA head Charles Bolden said.

US drone strike kill 3 suspected militants in North Waziristan

According to reports, at least three suspected militants were killed following a US drone strike in Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan.

This was the first airstrike conducted a week after Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif visited United States and urged Washington to stop drone strikes.

The latest airstrike was reportedly carried out near Miransha in North Waziristan tribal region early Thursday, killing at least three suspected militants, Radio Free Europe (RFE) reported.

Islamabad has repeatedly protested against the US drone strikes, saying they violate Pakistan’s sovereignty, but Washington views them as a vital tool in the fight against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the lawless tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

According to reports, United States has carried out at least 317 drone strikes in Pakistani tribal regions since 2008, killing at least 2160 suspected militants.

The latest figures were released by Pakistani military on Wednesday amid latest findings by United Nations which revealed earlier this month that nearly 400 civilians have been killed in US drone strikes in Pakistan.

However, Pakistani military has said that only 3 percent of those killed during the drone strike were civilians. The information, released by Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence to a parliamentary inquiry, also said no civilians were killed in 2012 and 2013.

14-year-old girl gang-raped, burned alive in India

According to reports, a 14-year-old girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped and then set on fire in India on Wednesday.

The incident reportedly took place in Sirsa Kalaar district of the northern city of Orai on Tuesday, and at least three village youths were involved in the gang rape and murder of the minor girl.

The minor girl was returning home after visiting a farm with her elder sister when she was attacked on Tuesday night by the three men.

The girl was reportedly murdered after she threatened the rapists that she would inform the villagers at which point they set her on fire.

She sustained burns to 80 percent of her body and died in the hospital Wednesday, according to Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).

Police said raids were under way to catch one of the men, identified as Ram Bahadur, and the two others suspected in the rape.

This comes as a 23-year-old woman was brutally gang raped in New Delhi and thrown from a moving bus last year, later dying from her injuries.

Similar cases are emerging around India and drawing attention to the issue of safety for women and girls there.

US drone strikes secretly endorsed by Pakistan: Report

Pakistan secretly endorsed CIA’s covert drone attack in it’s tribal regions for years despite repeated denouncement of the campaign.

The Washington Post in it’s latest report has revealed that CIA and Pakistani documents indicate CIA used Pakistani airstrips in the early years of the campaign.

In the meantime another media agency, National Journal has reported that Pakistani authorities have approved many of the drone strikes, based on a secret agreement which is in place since the administrations of George W. Bush and Pervez Musharraf.

Former Pakistani ambassador to Washington, Hussain Haqqani quoted by National Journal said, Pakistani intelligence made a practice of “protesting against the drones publicly while privately negotiating over whom the drones would target.”

This comes as Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his meeting with the US president Brack Obama on Wednesday urged the US should drone strikes in Pakistan.

Sharif told reporters after meeting with Obama in the Oval Office, “I brought up the issue of drones in our meeting, emphasizing the need for an end to such strikes.”

Obama welcomed Sharif to the White House after releasing $1.6 billion in aid — mostly for the military — that had been blocked amid high tensions over the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

“I’m confident that, working together, we can achieve a goal that is good for Afghanistan, but also helps to protect Pakistan over the long term,” Obama told reporters at the Oval Office without discussing on Nawaz Sharif’s call to end drone strikes.

According to reports, at least five people have been arrested by police in Pakistan over alleged marriage of a 6-year-old girl.

The men including the bridegroom, his father, the cleric who conducted the ceremony and two witnesses were reportedly arrested in northwestern Swat district on Tuesday.

A police officer in Swat district, Daud Khan quoted by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) said that two families in the remote village of Bazkhela were involved in marrying the girl to a 16-year-old boy.

Khan further added the men including the bridgegroom were arrested following a riad by police forces in the village.

He said the father of the girl managed to flee the area and police forces have launched an operation to arrest him. According to the police officer, the 6-year-old girl has been handed over to the elders in Bazkhela village.

At least 29 cases of forced marriages, one case of early marriage and murder, one case of abduction and forced marriage have been recorded during the past six months in Pakistan.

Pakistani law requires a bride to be at least 16 years old, but child marriages are still common in the rural areas.

Besides the forced and early marriages, there were 599 registered cases of torture against children, while 217 cases of child abuse were reported from children’s own homes, according to a report.

The Quest for Peace

This time his fingers were coloured red.

Hassan was a shoe-shiner a day before the recent twin-blasts incident in Parachinar, Kurram Agency. That day, when I saw him, his fingers were coloured black.

My first meeting with Hassan was an upbeat experience. Five years ago, he was in the third grade of a local primary school when I visited there. I asked the class about Islam, Science, Mathematics and Pakistan- One hand always raised with extreme passion and enthusiasm. A little hand with a circle of henna in the palm and the little fingers coloured with blue n black ink. It was him. Seems like colours loved to stick with his fingers.

His aspiration was to be a scientist and I was confident he would pursue his dream till the end. For me, he was the Santiago of Paulo Coelho.

A year after I saw him for the first, his father was slain while coming home from Peshawar, in the sectarian killings. Just after that he had started working to support his family.

And that evening, on 26th of July, I could see my Santiago surrendering his dream, bumped off in one of the twin blasts.

Around 50,000 people have been killed during this tormented epoch of terrorism of which the sectarian killings have a momentous portion. It is only the proletariat and not the bourgeoisie who suffered in all aspects. I cannot forget the statement of Ayaz, a guy from the labouring class “Are your economists insane by not including peace among the basic needs of life?” Seems like he was right. The updated version of Basic Human Needs is essential after 9/11 in which peace should come next to the food. The old version of only 3 items seems to be obsolete now. Research suggests that the only basic need before human civilization was food. Even in 21st century anyone can see people without shelter in metropolis, they cheer up when they join their “complete” family on footpath.

Global peace is essential for human survival but for my Pakistan it is going to be a war of existence. Even the gunpowder has become a major player in environmental pollution barometer. Our industrial hub Karachi was declared “The Most Dangerous City in the World” a couple of days before, which means a big expected capital outflow, increasing unemployment and further poverty-created crimes. People have started defining things in a different but interesting way. For example they define peace as “The momentary experience between two fatal incidents is called peace.”

But we are heading nowhere towards the hope. Even an optimist like me is compelled to think that this quest for peace is going to eliminate even more like Hassan.

Pakistan to receive $1.6bn in military and economic aid from US

Pakistan is expecting to receive more than $1.6 billion in military and economic aid from United States of America earlier next year.

According to the US officials and congressional aides, the decision was taken after relations between the two nations improved enough, which disintegrated over the covert US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and airstrike that killed Pakistani soldiers.

United States is quietly taking the decision as US and Pakistani officials announced the restart of their strategic dialogue amid Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif visit to Washington for talks this coming week.

US officials and congressional aides have said that most of the money have been cleared by Congress, and the flow of money should start earlier next year.

The US Department of State has stressed on the importance for enhancing Pakistan’s anti-terrorism capabilities through better communications, night vision capabilities, maritime security and precision striking with F16 fighter jets.

The department told Congress on July 25 that it would spend $295 million to help Pakistan’s military. Twelve days later it announced $386 million more, the Associated Press reported.

A pair of notifications, arriving on Aug. 13 and worth $705 million, centered on helping Pakistani troops and air forces operating in the militant hotbeds of western Pakistan, and other counterinsurgency efforts.

Nearly 400 civilians killed in US drone strikes in Pakistan: UN

The latest findings by United Nations has revealed at least 400 civilians have been killed in US drone strikes in Pakistan.

According to Ben Emmerson, UN special rapporteur, the latest report does not include details of overall US drone strikes as gathering direct data on individual drone strikes had taken longer than expected.

The investigation was launched ealier in January this year, and the investigation was expected to complete by autom. However, Ben Emmerson said that his report would not be complete until next year.

Pakistan government sources quoted in the report have said that nearly 400 civilians have been killed in US drone strikes, which makes almost 18 percent of drone strikes casualties during the past one decade.

According to the Pakistani officials, at least 2200 people have been killed during the past one decade in US drone strikes. “Officials indicated that, owing to underreporting and obstacles to effective investigation, those figures were likely to be an underestimate,” Ben Emmerson quoted by Telegraph said.

United Nations has also revealed that 31 civilians have been killed in drone strikes in the past 18 months in Afghanistan, while 12-18 civilians have been killed in Yemen.

The latest report on US drone strikes, offering a review of the legality of drone strikes and an analysis of the number of civilian casualties, will be e debated at the UN next week

Report: 30 million people are slaves worldwide, half in India

According to a new report, there are close to 30 million slaves worldwide with India home to nearly half, who are trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude.

According to the report ‘The Global Slavery Index 2013′, slavery in India ranges from bonded labour in quarries and kilns to commercial sex exploitation, although the scourge exists in all 162 countries.

The survey conducted by an Australian-based rights group – Walk Free Foundation, reveals that China is a distant second with 2.9m slaves; followed by Pakistan with 2.1m; Nigeria 0.7m; and Ethiopia 0.6m.

The report ranked 162 countries based on the number living in slavery, the risk of enslavement, and the strength of government responses to combating the illegal activity.

“Today some people are still being born into hereditary slavery, a staggering but harsh reality, particularly in parts of West Africa and South Asia,” the report said.

It also added, “Other victims are captured or kidnapped before being sold or kept for exploitation, whether through ‘marriage’, unpaid labour on fishing boats, or as domestic workers. Others are tricked and lured into situations they cannot escape, with false promises of a good job or an education.”

A number of European countries, except New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Ireland and Iceland are the 10 countries with the lowest prevalence of slavery – among the 160 ranked, according to the report.

while the report found that 10 countries accounted for 76 per cent of the 29.8 million people living in slavery – India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

India temple stampede death toll rises to 109 people

Officials in India’s Madhya Pradesh have announced that the death toll from a stampede at a Hindu festival has risen to 109 people.

The incident took place on a bridge near the Ratangarh temple close to the town of Datia after a panic broke out that left dozens of people dead while several others were killed after jumping from the bridge.

The Hindu festival was attended by hundreds of thousands of people. The incident reportedly took place following a rumour regarding the collapse of the bridge, which sparked a stampede.

A local police officer, Anand Mishra quoted by AFP said, “The latest information we have from the ground is that 109 people killed and 133 were injured.”

Mr. Mishra further added, “We recovered the bodies from the river and from where they were crushed to death.”

More than 100 people died in a similar incident at a festival in the southern state of Kerala in 2011, while more than 200 others were killed in a stampede inside Jodhpur Mehrangarh Fort in 2008.

Pakistani Taliban leader says he is ready for peace talks

The leader of the Pakistani Taliban group – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has said that he was ready to hold peace talks with the government of Pakistan.

TTP leader, Hakimullah Mehsud in an interview with the BBC blamed the government of Pakistan for delaying peace talks. “We believe in serious talks but the government has taken no steps to approach us.”

Hakimullah Mehsud denied his involvement in recent attacks in Pakistan and urged for an immediate halt to US drone strikes in Pakistani tribal regions.

“The government needs to sit with us, then we will present our conditions”, Hakimullah Mehsud said while denying any preconditions for talks.

He said, “The proper way to do it is that if the government appoints a formal team, and they sit with us, and we discuss our respective positions.”

In the meantime he insisted that the US drone strikes should be immediately stopped in a bid to pave the way for peace talks with the Pakistan government.

Mehsud said, “The government of Pakistan bombs innocent tribal people due to the pressure of America… Drone strikes conducted by Americans were backed by Pakistan. Then the Americans pressed Pakistan to start ground operations in these areas, and Pakistan complied.”

Hakimullah Mehsud has a $5m bounty on his head, and is the leader of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, which is an umbrella grouping of armed extremists, operating from the north-west of the country.

An Islamist leader was sentenced to death by Bangladesh’s supreme court, for war crimes during the country’s 1971 war of independence.

Abdul Kader Mullah, assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami party was convicted of murder, rape and torture on February 5. He was accused of being behind a series of killings including large-scale massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka.

Violent protests were reported following the verdict by the supreme court of Bangladesh. In the meantime, the parliament of Bangladesh amended a law to allow the state to appeal against any verdict or sentence passed by the tribunal.

The Jammat-e-Islami party youth activists also launched street demonstrations in the port of Chittagong immediately after Mr Mollah was sentenced to hang, and local newspapers reported violent clashes with the police.

Mullah’s party opposed Bangladeshi independence from Pakistan in the 1971 war but it denies accusations that its leaders committed murder, rape and torture.

More than 100 people have been killed in protests and counter-protests since January, when the tribunal set up by the government delivered its first verdict.

Four men sentenced to death over Delhi gang rape case

An Indian court on Friday sentenced four men to die by hanging, who were convicted of a brutal gang rape of a student in New Delhi last year.

The four men – a fruit vendor, a bus attendant, a gym handyman and an unemployed man – were found guilty on Tuesday of raping a young woman on a moving bus last December.

Judge Yogesh Khanna on Friday said the attack “shocked the collective conscience” of India, and the case fell in the “rarest of rare category”, rejecting pleas for lighter sentence.

“In these times, when crime against women is on the rise, the courts cannot turn a blind eye toward such gruesome crimes,” Judge Yogesh Khanna quoted by Associated Press said in announcing the sentence. He said the attack “shocked the collective conscience” of India.

The woman, a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist, and a male friend were lured onto a bus by five men and a teenager, penetrating her with a metal rod and inflicting grave internal injuries, then dumping her out on the roadside.

Her injuries were so severe that she died two weeks later in a Singapore hospital. One of the five men arrested in connection with the attack took his own life in prison in March.

The victim’s family, along with numerous politicians and government officials, had long called for the men to be executed.

“I am very happy our girl has got justice,” said the victim’s father, who cannot be named under Indian laws guarding his daughter’s identity as a rape victim.

Kashmir militants to increase attacks on India after NATO quits Afghanistan

Militants in Kashmir have threatened to launch “unprecedented” attacks against the Indian targets, and are preparing to deploy battle-hardened fighters in disputed Himalyan territory, where India and Pakistan have fought two wars.

Head of the United Jihadi Council, Syed Salahuddin said with NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan next year, thousands of militants would move from across the country to Kashmir.

Salahuddin quoted by AFP said, “The coming months and years will see a tremendous surge in mujahedeen’s activities in Indian Kashmir.”

He said, “The encounter between mujahedeen and Indian forces will enhance to an unprecedented level. The increase in attacks will be enormous and Indian forces will face huge losses.”

Thousands of people, mostly civilians have been killed in the Indian-held portion of Kashmir since 1989 in rebel groups fighting for the independence or it’s merger with Pakistan.

According to AFP, separatist ranks had swelled with foreign “jihadi” fighters from Arab countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan in mid-1990′s. Many of them were veterans of the 1980s war against Soviet troops in Afghanistan, which ultimately gave birth to Al-Qaeda.

Militants in Kashmir are saying that the conflict in Kashmir is increasingly out of Pakitan’s control, and they no longer need the clandestine support of the Pakistani secuirty establishment.

Uzair Ahmed, a militant with the Hizb-ul-Mujahedeen group quoted by AFP said, “Kashmiri youths realise that they should now rely on themselves.”

He said, “The attacks on Indian forces by Kashmiri mujahedeen have already been enhanced during the last three to four months… and the coming three-four years will be very difficult for the Indian forces.”

Abdul Aziz Alvi, the Kashmir head of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), blacklisted as a terror organisation by the United Nations and United States, said the militants command wide support.

“We, the citizens of Pakistani Kashmir, will also provide them support, whatever they require from us, because fighting to free our homeland is our basic duty,” he told AFP.

Fifth suspect in Mumbai photographer gang-rape arrested

According to Indian Police officials, the last of five men wanted in the gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai have been arrested in capital New Delhi on Sunday.

The officials further added that charges would be filed soon in a case that has incensed the public and fueled debate over whether women can be safe in India.

The 23-year-old photographer was taking photographs with a male colleague on Thursday evening in the abandoned Shakti Mills factory compound, when she was attacked by the gang of the men, who allegedly tied the male colleague up using a belt before repeatedly raping the woman.

Mumbai’s police commissioner, Satyapal Singh said, police had the evidence to prosecute the suspects, including the victim’s testimony and medical samples taken at the hospital where she was treated after the assault.

The alleged rape of the 23-year-old woman in the financial hub of Mumbai is the latest shocking sexual assault to make headlines in the South Asian nation.

This was the second shocking gang-rape attack in India which shocked Mumbai residents, following a similar incident in Delhi where a 23-year-old university student was gang-raped, and later died at a hospital in Singapore.

According to National Crime Records Bureau of India, at least 221 rape cases were reported in Mumbai in 2012, which shows an increase in the average number of reported rapes in a month in 2013 in the city as compared to last year.

Pakistani Taliban removes senior commander for welcoming talks offer

Taliban group in Pakistan – Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has sidelined a senior commander for welcoming the government’s offer to hold peace talks.

A spokesman for TTP, Shahidullah Shahid confirming the report said the commander, Asmatullah Muawiya, was not authorised to respond to the government’s offer.

Ismatullah Muaweea was the head of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) Punjab province chapter, and on Thursday he hailed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s offer, saying that the prime minister had shown maturity.

While speaking to his first televised address to the nation, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif offered negotiations to extremists in a bid to end bloodshed that has left thousands dead.

“The Taliban decision making body met under Commander Hakimullah Mehsud and decided that Ismatullah Muaweea has no relation with the TTP,” Shahidullah Shahid, Taliban spokesman, told AFP.

“He is respectable for us, but he has no relation with the TTP. The decision about the new head of TTP’s Punjab chapter will be taken in next meeting of our decision makers,” he said.

Pakistani Taliban militants, who have been waging a domestic insurgency since 2007, withdrew on offer to negotiate at the end of May in response to a US drone strike that killed the group’s deputy commander.

According to Indian police officials, a 23-year-old photojournalist has been gang-raped by five men in the Indian city of Mumbai.

Police officials said they had sent the girl to Jaslok Hospital for a medical examination, and her condition is now described by doctors as stable, though she has both external and internal injuries.

The incident took place around 8 pm on Thursday, after she was assaulted by a group of men at the dilapidated Shakti Mills compound in Lower Parel, south Mumbai.

Five men barged into the mill, saying the two had trespassed into “railway property”, where the photojournalist and her colleague were shooting for a magazine assignment.

According to the Times of India, the men urged the two to accompany them to the “senior officers”, where an altercation ensued, during which the men pounced on the girl and her colleague.

They first bashed up the colleague and, while two of them pinned him down, the remaining three took the girl to a corner and then raped her. They then left the mill compound, leaving the traumatised girl and her injured friend.

Last December, a 23-year-old medical student was brutally gang-raped by six men in a moving bus in Delhi. The horrific assault had provoked nation-wide protests and demands for better protection for women and more stringent laws against rape.

Pakistan court charges Pervez Musharraf in Benazir Bhutto murder

Pakistan’s ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf has formally been indicated over the murder of Benazir Bhutto by a court in Pakistan.

The court read out three charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and facilitation of murder to Musharraf during a brief hearing in the city of Rawalpindi.

Public prosecutor, Mohammad Azhar told reporters after the hearing, “He should be tried.”

Mr. Azhar further added, “He was charged with murder, criminal conspiracy for murder and facilitation for murder.”

The case was adjourned until August 27, after Musharraf denied the charges. “All the cases against Musharraf are fabricated. He denied all the charges,” said lawyer Afshan Adil.

Mr. Adil further added, “These charges are baseless. We are not afraid of the proceedings. We will follow legal procedures in the court.”

Scores of security forces guarded the area around the court in Rawalpindi, the city where Bhutto was killed on December 27, 2007, and roads were sealed off for Musharraf’s appearance.

Former prime minister Bhutto returned from self-imposed exile to run for office but was killed in a gun and suicide bomb attack within weeks. The government at the time blamed Pakistani Taliban militants and Musharraf has said he warned her of the danger she faced.

India’s defense minister A.K. Antony on Wednesday confirmed navy personnel had died after an Indian navy submarine with 18 sailors on board caught fire and sunk at a Mumbai base.

According to the Indian officials, the INS Sindhurakshak, diesel-powered vessel was badly damaged following a blast at midnight, and fire fighters spent four hours putting out the blaze.

The officials further added that the fire was followed by three large explosions which lit up the south Mumbai sky. “The cause of the explosion is not known. We are searching for the 18 personnel,” navy spokesman Narendra Kumar Vispute said.

“It’s a loss to all of us. It’s a tragedy,” Antony told reporters before leaving for Mumbai to assess the situation.

Local TV news station Headlines Today showed video of the explosion on the diesel-powered submarine, apparently filmed by a bystander. An enormous ball of red and yellow fire rose hundreds of feet into the air.

The 16-year-old Russian-made sub is reported to have been completely loaded, it reportedly suffered a fire while docked in Visakhapatnam city in southern India, killing a 24-year-old sailor and leaving two others with burns.

US pulls staff from Lahore consulate due to specific threats

The U.S. Department of State evacuated all nonessential government personnel from it’s consulate in Lahore city of Pakistan and warned Americans not to travel to Pakistan.

A U.S. official said the Department of State ordered this drawdown due to specific threats concerning the U.S. consulate in Lahore.

The official further added that the move was not related to the threat of an Al Qaeda attack that prompted Washington to close temporarily 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and Africa.

The worshippers were gunned down as they left prayers for Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

This comes as a suicide bomber struck at a police funeral in the city on Thursday, killing 38 people in an attack claimed by the Taliban that will raise yet more concerns about the violence that has continued unabated since the newly-elected government took office.

The warning in Lahore, near Pakistan’s border with India, comes two days after Washington evacuated some diplomats from Yemen and told its nationals to leave that country immediately.

Nearly two dozen missions were shut by United States across the Middle East after a worldwide alert earlier this month. The Americans were warned that al Qaeda may be planning attacks in August, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa.

U.S. consulates have been attacked in Pakistan previously. At least four Pakistanis were killed following a car bomb and grenade attack on the U.S. consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar in 2010.

A live television broadcast in Pakistan has prompted fury by giving away abandoned babies to would-be parents live on TV. Fatima is one of the babies given away on the show.

The host, Aamir Liaquat Hussain, has given away two babies so far ho were abandoned in Pakistan’s southern city of Karachi. “This is the beautiful girl who was thrown on pile of garbage by somebody. See how beautiful and innocent she is,” he said, showing a baby girl to the camera.

Mr. Hussain who is one of Pakistan’s most popular talk show hosts, insisted the babies would have been “eaten by cats or dogs” had they not been discovered by the show.

The babies were presented by Muhammad Ramzan Chhipa, who runs the Chhipa Welfare Association. Another baby, a boy, is due to be given to another couple at some point in the coming days.

Technically, there’s no law against giving the babies away as prizes. Pakistan has no official adoption law, and the new parents will still have to apply for guardianship at a family court, CNN reports.

Many Pakistanis expressed disgust that abandoned babies were being given away in what they see as an attempt to boost ratings.

The babies provided by NGO, and, despite not knowing before hand if they would “win” a baby, the couples chosen were said to be pre-screened and have reportedly had “four or five” sessions at the NGO.

According to Pakistani intelligence officials, at least six people were killed following a suspected US drone strike in Northern Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border.

The officials further added, the airstrike was carried out in Shawal area of Northern Waziristan on Sunday night.

At least two missiles were fired and targeted suspected men who crossed into Pakistani territory from Afghanistan, the intelligence officials said adding that the identity of the men killed in airstrike is not clear so far.

In the meantime local media agencies reported that a US drone fired two missiles at a residential building just before Iftar. Missile attack claimed eight militants including four from Arab countries.

An intelligence official in the area, who was authoritzed to speak only on the condition of anonymity, said preliminary reports indicated that a senior commander with a Pakistani Taliban faction led by Gul Bahadur, which has links with Al Qaeda, had been killed in the attack.

North Waziristan is home to a mix of Pakistani, Afghan and al-Qaeda-linked foreign militants.

Attacks by unmanned American aircraft are deeply unpopular in Pakistan, but Washington views them as a vital tool in the fight against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in the lawless tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

The strike was the third one in July. The previous strike occurred July 13, killing at least 17 people, also in North Waziristan.

57 killed, over 180 injured in Parachinar explosions

At least 57 people were killed and more than 180 others were injured following deadly explosions in the Shia-dominated town of Parachinar in Pakistan’s tribal region of Kurram.

Today’s incident was the deadliest attack to hit the country during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

According to local officials, the incidents took place after suicide bombers on motorcycles blew themselves up within a minute of each other outside Shi’ite mosques.

The dead toll could rise as doctors at the main public hospital said 57 people were killed, and 20 critically wounded among the more than 150 injured.

Security officials said that the first explosion took place meters away from a Shi’ite mosque near a busy market in Parachinar, which was followed shortly afterwards by a second blast, close to another mosque in the town.

It was unclear which group carried out the attack and no one immediately claimed responsibility. Shi’ite Muslims make up a little over 10 percent of Pakistan’s population of 180 million.

Sectarian violence has been on the rise in nuclear-armed Pakistan, where hardline Sunni militant groups have been relentlessly attacking Shi’ites whom they see as heretics.

Taliban rejects reports on sending fighters to Syria

The Pakistani Taliban Group on Tuesday dismissed reports regarding the setup of Taliban base in Syria and Taliban’s involvement in Syria war, saying that the movement’s focus remained in Pakistan.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) denying the reports said that only a small number of Taliban fighters including Arabs and Central Asians have gone to Syria independently.

This comes as reports recently suggested that foreign jihadists including Pakistan Taliban militants have flocked to Syria following uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

However a senior Taliban commander from the shura or ruling council of TTP quoted by AFP said that there was no tactical shift and no decision had been made to send forces to Syria.

The commander speaking on the condition of anonymity said, “There is no reality in these reports, we have far better targets in the region, NATO troops headed by the Americans are present in Afghanistan.”

He said, “We are already in a war with Pakistani troops. We support the mujahideen’s struggle in Syria but in our opinion, we have a lot more to do here in Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

“The great evil (America) is here in Afghanistan, troops from 30 kafir (non-believer) countries are attacking innocent people in Afghanistan, so Bashar al-Assad is not that important for us,” the TTP commander said adding that “Obama is the big evil, Americans are a much bigger evil for us. The Taliban shura has never discussed sending mujahideen to Syria.”

A mid-ranking Taliban commander in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan also conrmed that some fighters had gone to Syria “in a personal capacity”.

The TTP is an umbrella group for numerous factions trying to bring down the Pakistani state and impose sharia law. It has ties to the Afghan Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif summoned a top American envoy to protest a U.S. drone strike that killed at least six militants in the volatile North Waziristan province.

According to a statement released by Pakistan government, “Pakistan strongly condemns the drone strikes which are a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The importance of bringing an immediate end to drone strikes was emphasized.”

The statement further added, U.S. Charges D’Affaires Richard Hoagland was summoned to Pakistan’s Foreign Office to receive the government’s official protest. U.S.

Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan’s national security adviser on Saturday said, “Obviously this is an issue that will be taken up at a higher political level with the American authorities.”

A U.S. Embassy official confirmed to The Associated Press that the encounter took place, but did not provide further details.

This comes as at least two suspected U.S. drone attacks have taken place in Pakistan in a little more than a week and occurred just days after Sharif vowed in his inaugural speech to stand up to Washington over the issue.

According to Pakistani security officials, at least seven people were killed and three others were injured following a US drone strike in northwest Pakistan late Friday.

This was first such an attack since the swearing-in of Nawaz Sharif as prime minister this week.

The missiles hit a compound in Shokhel village, more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan tribal district which is known as a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

A senior local security official quoted by AFP said, “The US drone fired two missiles targeting a militant compound and killing at least seven militants.”

Many Pakistanis oppose U.S. drone strikes because they say the strikes kill large numbers of innocent civilians — something the U.S. denies — and end up breeding more extremism by those seeking retribution.

The country’s new prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, who was sworn in on Wednesday, has lashed out against the U.S. drone program.

During his campaign, he sometimes criticized the U.S. and its policy of using drones to kill militants in the tribal areas of Pakistan. Speaking to parliament earlier this week, he once again called for an end to the drone policy.

According to Pakistani security officials, at last four people were killed when a US drone fired two missiles in the volatile Pakistani regions of Waziristan.

This was the first such attack since a May 11 general elections in which the use of the unmanned aircraft was a major issue.

In the meantime local residents are saying at least seven people were killed after drone fired two missiles that struck a mud-built house at Chashma village, 3 km (2 miles) east of Miranshah.

Washington’s drone program is extremely unpopular in Pakistan, although the number of strikes has dropped dramatically since the height of the program in 2010.

The attack was condemned by Pakistan foreign ministry. “Any drone strike is against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan and we condemn it,” the official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.

This comes as President Barack Obama recently indicated plans to scale back drone strikes in Pakistan, which was widely welcomed by the people of North Waziristan, where drones armed with missiles have carried out the most strikes against militants over the past years.

According to reports four others were also injured during the attack and it is yet not clear if those killed during the attack were the intended targets.

According to Pakistani police officials, at least 17 children were killed after a gas-cylinder exploded inside a school bus on the outskirts of Gujrat.

Mohammed Rasheed, a police officer, said seven children were also injured on Saturday when the faulty gas cylinder exploded on the outskirts of the city of Gujrat in eastern Pakistan.

The driver of the bus had survived the explosion, local media quoted police officer Mohammad Rasheed as saying.

Majority of the vehicles in Pakistan are run by compressed natural gas which is considered to be cheaper as compared to diesel and petrol.

Police officials said the school van carrying 22 students was on its way when suddenly the cylinder exploded after which the van caught fire. Initially, 12 children were burnt but later the toll rose to 17.

Five children were critically injured in the incident and were shifted to hospital, the officials.

A senior female Pakistani politician Zahra Shahid Hussain, was gunned down here on Saturday night.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh senior vice president, Zahra Shahid Hussain’s murder came on the eve of a closely-fought partial reelection in NA-250 Karachi, a constituency which PTI is very confident to lay claim to given the re-polls are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently.

She was killed by gunmen on a motorcycle outside her home in the city’s upmarket Defence neighbourhood.

mran Khan, the celebrated former cricket player and the chairman of the PTI, blamed Hussain’s death on Altaf Hussain, the leader of the rival MQM party.

However Pakistan’s Dawn News reported that Zahra Shahid Hussain was shot in the head during “an attempted robbery incident.”

But a local PTI leader, Firdous Shamim quoted by AFP said, Hussain “was leaving her home for some work when three gunmen attacked her. She thought they wanted to snatch her purse and handed it over to them but they killed her.”

Police said all three gunmen escaped after the attack late Saturday.

“They shot her with one bullet near her chin and she could not survive,” senior police official Nasir Aftab told AFP.

Raja Pervez barred from leaving Pakistan over corruption charges

The Federal Investigation Agency on Monday barred fromer Pakistan premier Raja Pervez Ashraf from leaving the country.

The direction was given a day after resounding defeat of Raja Pervez Ashraf in general election. He has been accused with several others in corruption for setting up Rental Power Projects (RPPs) worht Rs22 billion.

All airports were instructed to prevent Ashraf and several others from leaving the country.

This comes as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) earlier decided to file a reference in the RPPs case after May 11 elections.

The supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) back in March also issued a contempt of court notice to former premier Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on trying to influence the court by writing a letter to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for constituting a commission to investigate the RPPs scam case.

The rental power projects were mooted by the outgoing Pakistan Peoples Party-led government as a solution to the country’s crippling energy crisis.

The alleged corruption in the setting of the projects led to Ashraf being nicknamed “Raja Rental”, and he uffered a humiliating defeat in the general election in a parliamentary constituency in his hometown of Gujjar Khan near Rawalpindi.

Nawaz Sharif declares victory in Pakistan’s landmark elections

Nawaz Sharif declared victory for his centre-right party in Pakistan’s landmark elections and appealed to all parties to join him in tackling Pakistan’s mountainous problems after securing victory in historic elections that defied Taliban violence.

According to unofficial partial poll results Sharif’s centre-right Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) was leading the race with 126 seats and Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had 34.

Trends from some 250 of the 272 parliamentary seats that went to the polls showed that the PML (N) was set to bag in excess of 110 seats, while the Pakistan People’s Party and Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were lagging far behind with about 35 seats each.

The landmark polls mark the first time an elected civilian administration completed a full term to hand power to another through the ballot box, in a country where there have been three military coups and four military rulers.

The 63-year-old Sharif, who has twice served as premier, expressed a desire to work with all parties to solve the country’s problems in a victory speech given to his supporters in the eastern city of Lahore.

Polls open in Pakistan’s landmark election

Polls opened across Pakistan on Saturday despite a bloody campaign marred by Taliban attacks, with deadly violence struck the country again on Friday after a pair of bombings which targeted election offices in northwet pakistan.

Saturday’s poll marks the success of first civilian government in Pakistan during its 65-year of history and hand over of power in democratic elections.

United States of America is closely watching the elections in Pakistan as the country is considered to play a crucial role in Washington’s fight against the terrorism in the region.

Polls opened at 8am local time and were due to close at 5pm, allowing an electorate of more than 86 million to vote for the 342-member national assembly and four provincial assemblies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Baluchistan.

The people of Pakistan hope the polls will deliver change and ease frustrations with a feeble economy, widespread corruption, chronic power cuts and crumbling infrastructure.

Pakistan has also blocked its borders with Iran and Afghanistan hours before polls opened in a bid to prevent attacks by foreign militants, the officials said adding that the border will remain closed for three days.

This comes as militants have carried out attacks on Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) along with the Karachi-based Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP), however other contestants including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of Nawaz Sharif and the Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party of Imran Khan have been able to campaign without being specifically targeted by militants.

Pakistan has deployed more than 600,000 security and army personnel to guard against possible attacks on the polling day.

Death toll from Bangladesh building collapse crosses 700: Officials

Officials in Bagladesh on Tuesday announced, the death toll from last month’s collapse of a building housing garment factories in Bangladesh has passed 700.

Captain Shahid Ahsan Bhuiyan, speaking from an army control room which is coordinating the recovery operation near Dhaka, told AFP that the death toll now stood at 705, with 2,437 people having been rescued alive.

The collapse of the Rana Plaza on 24 April stands as Bangladesh’s worst industrial disaster and it sparked outrage among workers in the country as survivors of the country’s worst-ever industrial disaster protested for compensation.

According to the officials the incident took place after the building’s owner illegally added three floors and allowed the garment factories to install generators.

Vibrations from garment machines and from the generators were thought to have contributed to the collapse, the officials added.

A Pakistani prisoner in India, Sanaullah Ranjay was in a coma Friday after being beaten by another inmate, officials said.

The incident takes place a day after India’s Sarabjit Singh succumbed to grievous injuries sustained in a murderous assault on him in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail

Indian officials confirmed that prisoner Sanaullah Haq was badly beaten by a fellow inmate in a prison in the city of Jammu. Reports said he was transferred to a hospital in Chandigargh with head injuries.

Sanaullah was attacked by a former Indian soldier convicted for murder. He was being tried for murder since the late 1990s for carrying out acts of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry condemning the attack called it an “obvious retaliation” for the killing of the Indian prisoner. Indian officials said they would investigate the attack and had issued an advisory to strengthen security for Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.

In the meantime a spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Syed Akbaruddin, said Indian officials were ensuring that Mr Haq gets the medical treatment he requires and would grant consular access to him as soon as his condition stabilises.

Pakistan has requested that Mr Haq be allowed to return to Pakistan on humanitarian grounds – a request also made by India for Mr Singh but which was refused.

Indian spy Sarabjit Singh dies after attack in Pakistan

An Indian man on death row in Pakistan for espionage died early Thursday after being attacked by fellow inmates. Sarabjit Singh, 51, died in hospital in the eastern city of Lahore, where he had been in a coma for at least five days.

Singh’s lawyer Owais Sheikh confirmed the death and said that his body “has been moved to the hospital mortuary”.

He sustained several injuries, including a fractured skull, when six prisoners attacked him on Friday last week, hitting him on the head with bricks.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said the government had been providing “all assistance to the family of Sarabjit Singh as well as to the Indian authorities since the occurrence of this unfortunate incident”.

According to a statement released by the Foreign Office, Sarabjit had died of cardiac arrest despite being “provided the best treatment available” and the staff of Jinnah Hospital working round the clock to save his life.

Sarabjit was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons. His family says he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

His fate has been a source of tension between Pakistan and India since he was attacked last Friday. In a statement, the Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, said he was “deeply saddened” by Mr. Singh’s death, describing him as a “brave son of India”.

In the meantime local administration official Abdul Haseebhe said, “It was a female suicide bomber, about 18-20 years old. We have found her legs and head.”

The dead included a security personnel, a hospital worker and two civilians, he added.

Bajaur, one of seven districts that make up Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), had been a stronghold of the Taliban until 2008. However, the security forces cleared the region of Taliban militants as the result of major offensives.

According to Pakistani government officials, at least five people were killed after a US drone fired two missiles into a Taliban training camp in Pakistan on Wednesday.

The attack was carried out in the Baber Ghar area of the south Wazirsitan tribal district on the Afghan border, a stronghold of Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud where the faction runs several camps.

The attack was also confirmed by another official, who also spoke to AFP, saying the drone targeted a base of Pakistan’s umbrella Taliban faction, Tehreek-e-Taliban.

In the meantime a statement issued by the Foreign Office on Monday condemned the last attack and said such unilateral strikes violated international law.

The statement added, “Such attacks also set dangerous precedents in inter-state relations. The government of Pakistan calls upon the US government to stop such attacks based on mutual respect and established international norms.”

The covert strikes are publicly criticized by the Pakistani government as a violation of sovereignty but American officials believe they are a vital weapon in the war against Islamist militants.
