Afghanistan adds ‘Nationality’ and ‘Ethnicity’ to help launch e-ID cards distribution

By Khaama Press - Mon Apr 04 2016, 5:38 pm

Afghan E-ID cardsThe Afghan government has brought changes in the controversial Article of Population Registration Act which was barring the distribution of electronic Identification (e-ID) cards.

The changes in Article 6 of the Act have been incorporated during a meeting of the Law Committee of the Afghan Cabinet.

The Office of the Second Vice President Sarwar Danish said the Nationality and Ethnicity of the e-ID card holder will be printed on the cards based on the new amendments.

The government will start distribution of e-ID cards once the Afghan parliament approves the Population Registration Act with the new amendments, according to a statement by the Office of the Second Vice President.

The distribution of e-ID cards was expected to launch around 5 years ago but the process has always been facing obstacles, including the addition of ‘Nationality’ and ‘Ethnicity’ as well as other issues.

The e-ID cards are expected to resolve the majority of security issues as well as helping the government to organize a free, fair and transparent election.

The project is estimated to cost around $100 million to launch the system with earlier reports suggesting the main international donors have decided to withdraw payments for the launch of the system.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Second Vice President said the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology have pledged full support to launch distribution of the e-ID cards.

  1. Afghan national problem is their own racism. From Pashtun, to Tajik, Hazara , Uzbek, thought they are more than the other. The unity of this country is divided into too many small tribes, almost comparable to a broken jar.

    1. I’m so surprised but around the worlds,in ID just see you name, surname, place and date of birth Nationality, but no Ethnic , for example in Canada ,there is 400 Languages and 250 Ethnics his nationality  are Canadian Canadienne ,But Americans ,French,English ,nor Ethnic for example Indian,Spanish,Iranian Rasia Chinese,Etc

  2. What a shame is this… what if your mom is Tajik and your dad is Pashtun, or your grandfather and grandmom was pashtun and you married another ethnicity? Will they write 50/50 or 25/75 pashton on the ID cards? lol

  3. I hope the issue in which was created has been solved by our politicians, I think it’s a shame for us to discuss about something that is very clear for everyone, so, I myself don’t want to mention my nationalities in the new ID, but there are some stupid people that still emphasizing to be named as their own tribes, as a matter of fact, I my opinion it’s right of all our respected tribes to name their own nationalities on IDs because there are many tribes in our country. So, all tribes want to be named by their own tribe which is absolutely correct and if anyone trying to not publish it as is then it’s still our problems. So please don’t deceive by any foreign interference towards our improvements and unity. There will be no discriminations among our beloved people in the future Inshallah, Amin.

  4. It is a good news that the govt plan to solve the problems of eNID process but the only Nationality cant be enough. the government should focus on the several real problems that restricted the eNID distribution process such as Technical problems, Management Problem and eNID context problem (

1- ID without nationality is invalid 2- ID without issue date and expiry date is invalid 3- ID without name of religion ( ISLAM) is not accepted for afghans 4- ID

without gender is creating problem 5- ID should have national code (ID) 6- ID can have blood group) and Financial problem, unless these problem are covered the distribution process cant be succeeded .

  5. It was a big loss of resources, time and opportunities for Afghanistan. I would like to appeal to all the en-lighted beloved people in Afghanistan to aim for “One Country – One Nation” by rejecting the ethnicity episode of the e-ID. We should not write the subcategory of ethnicity in our e-ID even if it is approved by parliament.

We shall be aware, those who want the  inclusion of ethnicity subcategory in the e-ID, they have a plan for future. They will carry on with the ethnicity drama and will continue to cash it. For them the issue of ethnicity is a thriving business. Now it is up to us, we can reject it and not include it in our e-ID and get one step closer to “One Country – One Nation”. If we follow the ethnicity artists and provide them with further opportunities, they will continue with their ethnicity trade and will carry on to cause further casualties. We have lost 5 years.

Lets choose “One Country – One One Nation”.

    Regards

  6. Salaam dear Afghans,

Our enemy has always tried to divide an conquer us, so if we want to be united we should not allow ethnicity to be included in our eID and we should stand tall as one Country and one Nation.  The enemies of Afghanistan will try to please their masters by dividing us so please don’t fall to their trap and be united as one Nation.

    Regards

  7. Sorry but I do not see even one word of English when going abroad to eventually get a translater from Afghanistan to read us our identity

  8. such as Afghanistan passport So must have been the id card
