At least 25 Turkish troops have been killed in an explosion that rocked an ammunition depot in western Turkey, the army says.

The cause of the blast, which happened late on Wednesday in the western city of Afyon, was not immediately known, the military said in a statement.

Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu said that the explosion occurred late Wednesday at a section where hand grenades were kept.

The soldiers’ remains were discovered early Thursday after a blaze caused by the blast was extinguished.

On September 2, ten Turkish soldiers were killed and several others wounded in fighting between the army and the members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern province.

Clashes between the Turkish troops and the members of the armed group have intensified in recent months.
